Membership dues received are used as general operating funds. The Chamber also receives
occupancy taxes from the tourist authority, which comes from taxes paid to motels, bed
and breakfasts and campgrounds within the city limits of Andrews. These funds may only
be used for advertising and promotion of Andrews.
Even with limited funds, the Chamber has contributed greatly to the area.
In most cases the Chamber has worked closely with other organizations to accomplish
their goals. You may not be aware of the Chamber's involvement in accomplishments such as:
- Welcome signs - After working for several years with the North Carolina
Department of Transportation, the Chamber installed a welcome sign at the west
end of town on US 19/74 a few years ago. The Chamber has just completed the
installation of a welcome sign at the east end of town. Both signs are beautifully
landscaped thanks to assistance from many area civic organizations.
- Rest Area - Along the Valley River at the intersection of US 19/74 and Beaver
Creek Road sits the rest area. This beautiful spot shaded by oak trees and alive
with a variety of flowers has been featured in many magazines. With picnic tables
and grills, this serene spot offers travelers and residents a serene picnic spot
It was the result of efforts by the Andrews Chamber working closely with the North
Carolina Department of Transportation.
- Valleytown Cultural Arts Center - When the First Baptist Church vacated the
building they had used since the early 1900s it was acquired by the Chamber. They
turned it over to the Valleytown Cultural Arts and Historical Society. The building
provides a facility for the community to stage performing and visual arts.
- Hall Memorial Park - Through cooperative efforts of the Chamber, the Town of
Andrews and the Norfolk/Southern Railroad, Hall Memorial Park was developed. The
park and gazebo play host to many activities during the year.
- Schoolhouse Steps - When the steps leading from the town up to the school grounds
were in dire need of repair, the Andrews Revitalization Committee of the Chamber
coordinated the task. The steps were rebuilt and lined with benches with memorial
plaques. A walkway in honor and memory of the people of Andrews winds its way to
Freedom Memorial Plaza.
- Freedom Memorial Plaza - At the top the schoolhouse steps stands Freedom Memorial
Plaza, in honor of all those who have given so much in the name of Freedom. The
site offers a commanding view of the town below.
- Landscaping - A number of landscaping and beautification projects in the downtown
area have been completed by the Andrews Revitalization Committee
